Roskilde Museum - local history for all ages

At Roskilde Museum, visitors can explore the history of the city and its surroundings in one of Denmark’s oldest cities. Roskilde is on the island of Zealand, west of Copenhagen. The exhibitions range from ancient times and the Middle Ages to the modern era, and your visit can be rounded off with a break in the museum café or a browse in the shop.

Discover the city's history in the heart of Roskilde

The museum is housed on Sankt Ols Stræde in two heritage-listed buildings: the Sugar House, a former sugar refinery, and Liebes Gård, a merchant’s residence. These historic settings create a unique atmosphere for the exhibitions, which span from Ice Age artefacts, the Iron Age and the Middle Ages to more recent times, when the wars of the 20th century left their mark on the city.

The museum features both permanent and temporary exhibitions, where archaeological finds and cultural artefacts bring history vividly to life.
For children and families, there are holiday activities, a children’s activity area, play in the courtyard and a room where you can eat your packed lunch. See the museum’s current family activities.

In addition, guided tours are available in both the exhibitions and around the city itself - bringing history to life, from prehistoric aurochs and Viking times to the medieval and modern Roskilde.

Explore the café and museum shop

Complement your visit with something delicious from the museum café, Jampa, which places a strong emphasis on quality and guest experience. With its modern design and honest communication, the café aims to inspire visitors.

You’re also welcome to explore the unique selection of items in the museum shop, ideal for gifts or inspiration.

Experience Roskilde Racer

The Roskilde Racer exhibition tells the story of the Roskilde Ring motor racing circuit. In the children’s activity area, young visitors can play racing drivers, change wheels and step onto the podium.

Check the museum’s current opening hours, admission and practical visitor information when planning your visit.
